Variable Fasting Blood Sugar Level. Oral Medication For Diabetes?
Hi may name is Pat. 49 years old. My fasting blood sugar level varies from 100 to 120 mg per dm I do play squash every other day and sweat lot. Do not take any direct sugar and avoid heavy carbohydrate meal for dinner. Do you suggest me to go for oral medication of diabetics or is there a method to measure my blood insulin?
Hi Pat. Thanks for the query.
I would like to know what your post-meal sugars are. If they are within 180 mg/dl then you certainly do not need medication to treat these kinds of sugars. Please continue following dietary modifications and squash or any other kind of exercise which will keep your sugars always near normal and you would be able to avoid sugar related complications. Keep watch on your average sugar (HbA1c- glycosylated hemoglobin) every six months and make sure it is less than 7%. In that case you will never need oral medications.
There sure is a method of measuring insulin in the blood but this test is never recommended in patients like you as it is not at all necessary. In fact in a person with pre-diabetes or early diabetes, the blood insulin levels are abnormally so high that you would be confused why you got the sugars for? Absolutely NO need to check insulin levels in the body in your case.
I hope you got your answer. Take care.
