Varicocele, Suggested Surgery. Can It Be Delayed?

hi doctors i'm 22 years old, i am suffering from varicocele for more than 3 years until now, the pain is tolerable about 4 out of 10 (10 is the most painful) , my doctor advised me to wear supportive underwear when playing basketball, he also advised me that surgery is NOT necessary at this time, he told me that i can have surgery after marriage if fathering is delay. so my question is can i wait many more years before having surgery? can i wait for another 5 years? thanks! :)

Hi ! Good evening. I am Dr Shareef, a general surgeon answering your query.

Varicocele is not an emergency operation, unless it causes severe pain in someone causing disruption in his routine, which is very unusual. It is thought to be responsible for oligospermia , but firm evidence in support of this is lacking. That is why your doctor told you that you can wait for surgery till after your marriage if there is any delay in fathering a baby. However, even surgery at that time is not a guarantee for fathering a baby.

If I were your doctor, I would advise you for a semen analysis. If it comes out to be normal, there is nothing to worry excepting for using a good scrotal support and an anti inflammatory drug if need be and in that case there is no harm waiting for another 5 years for the surgery. But the semen analysis may have to be repeated at 6 monthly intervals,and if there is any reduction in the sperm count and in their morphology, I would advise you to consult a surgeon who on clinical examination and a possible Doppler ultrasound (the value of which is again controversial as of now) can advise you on further management.
