Was Diagnosed With Pernious Anemia, Taking Shots. Have Swelling In Hand, Pain Going Up To Elbow And Shoulder

Hi was diagnoised with pernious anemia over 6 years ago, was first on two weekly shots then every month now every three months, my injection is two weeks late, I have a swelling on my right hand, pain going up to my elbow and severe pain in my shoulder all right sided - do know I have have nerve damage all on this side, but Im worried sick.. can u help please

Hi and thanks for the query,

This pain could related to the shots mainly on one condition. This is if an infection developed at the site initially or close to this injection. This however, not very rare. Trauma should be carefully excluded. A physical examination to ascertain inflammation of any regional lymph nodes could be very helpful. An infection must be exlcuded first in this case. Blood tests like a Complete Blood count in search of raised white blood cells, and raised levels of markers of inflammation (especially C reactive protein and Erythrocyte sedimentation rate) could be very helpful.

It is only when an infection has been excluded that traumatic and autoimmune or imnflammatory disease origins could be explored.
