Start by giving
liquid diet consisting of fresh fruit juices, soups both veg and non-veg and coconut water,
glucose water, lemon water with sugar to check his tolerance.
If well-tolerated, you can begin with simple easily digestible foods like boiled rice and dals, Khichri (indian dish made with a combination of rice and pulse), semolina as pudding or upma, sago pudding or khichri, potatoes, bananas, curd (not during
fever), buttermilk etc. Do not give milk until
diarrhoea and fever subsides.
Give small frequent feedings as the digestive system is weak after
typhoid. Avoid heavy meals or foods which are hard to digest like fried and fatty foods, too much of butter or ghee, spices and chillies which can cause
stomach discomfort.
In non-veg, you can give fish, chicken, boiled eggs, mutton but avoid rich gravies and spicy and oily curries. Do not give minced meat or kebabs and biryanis as they are heavy with lots of fats and spices. Give boiled curries with less spices and oil. You can give mutton soup/chicken soup, add boiled chicken pieces, scrambled eggs to rice dishes/ boiled noodles or pasta dishes.
Avoid whole fruits instead squeeze out fresh juice at home like sweet lime or musambi, pomegranate juice, orange juice. You can add glucose or sugar to sweeten it.
Do not give raw vegetables as salads. Avoid fibrous vegetables. Instead you can give mixed vegetable soup like (tomatoes, spinach, carrots and beetroot).
Give only filtered or boiled and cooled water. Do not give outside food as it is not prepared with utmost cleanliness and hygiene.
Make sure the child maintains good personal hygiene too. Wash his hands with a soap and water before eating and after using the toilet to prevent contamination of food.
Give only freshly prepared home cooked food. When cooking non-veg, it should be cooked well at high temperatures and avoid undercooking.
Hope this will guide you in feeding the child well for faster recovery.
