Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Few days back i was suffering from running nose & cough, headache & slight fever. I visited my local doctor and he gave me some of his medicine & told me to buy some tablet form outside, the tab he recommended me was AZITHROMYCIN TABLETS I.P. But when I searched on internet about this tab it was written that these tab are used for bacterial infection & not for viral infection i.e. common cold & cough. So my question is whether the doctor prescribed me wrong tablet?
Hello, This is Dr. Klarida Papaqako answering your question.
Azythromicin is an antibiotic which is given, in case of bacterial infection of lower respiratory tract and some other conditions.
If you have this infection you can have signs of common cold plus fever more then 3-5 days, not getting better, not good general condition, possibly shortness of breath and chest pain.
If I was your caring doctor, I would check you for all this signs and give the treatment only in this case. If not, I will explain that its not needed, because it has no value in viral infections.
Hope the information helps, Take care.
