What Are Hair Like White Things That Can Be Pulled Out Of The Skin Which Seems Like A Bump Before It Is Pulled?

My girlfriend keeps pulling these white hairlike things from all over her body. They range in size from a couple cm to almost 6 inches. She says it feels like something is crawling under her skin where she pulls it from. There is always a small bump that is there before she pulls it out. What is happening to her?

Hello,

The crawling sensation felt on or under the skin is called formication. This is due to methamphetamine, cocaine, crystal meth, or heroin use. She is advised to join a detox center if under any kind of addiction. Other factors that may cause similar symptoms are mental problems like depression, anxiety or schizophrenia, neurological conditions. Certain underlying medical conditions like Keratosis pilaris, plugged follicles may cause such white things.

It sometimes goes away by its own. If it is persistent, it is treated with a moisturizing lotion to soothe itchy, dry skin. Taking warm baths can help unclog and loosen pores. Retinol creams are helpful. Get clinically examined by a Dermatologist to detect other skin conditions like acne, allergies, shingles. Your treatment will depend on the pathology / skin condition diagnosed.

KP is treated successfully with a microdermabrasion, an intense exfoliating treatment, chemical peels or laser treatment. She may be referred to a Psychiatrist if need be. Skin conditions like acne, keloids, allergies, and shingles may cause raised skin bumps. Bumps may also occur with more severe health conditions that require medical attention, such as MRSA, cellulitis, or cancer.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
