HI THANKS FOR POSTING YOUR HEALTH QUERY ON HEALTH CARE MAGIC. YOUR SON IS CURRENTLY RECEIVING THE RIGHT TREATMENT REGARDING HIS " ABSENCE SEIZURES".OF COURSE HE IS RECEIVING A HIGHER DOSE OF 1000mg A DAY.AT THIS DOSAGE SIDE EFFECTS ARE EXPECTED.THEY INCLUDE WEIGHT GAIN,SEDATION,IN-COORDINATION OF GAIT,CONCENTRATION PROBLEMS,LETHARGY ETC.A SERIOUS FATAL REACTION RARELY SEEN IN CHILDREN ON VALPARIN IS " FULMINANT HEPATIC NECROSIS" LEADING TO LIVER FAILURE.YOU SHOULD BE CAUTIOUS ABOUT THIS SIDE EFFECT POSSIBLE IN YOUR CHILD. SUDDEN ONSET OF JAUNDICE IN YOUR CHILD SHOULD PROMPT YOU TO TAKE IMMEDIATE CONSULTATION OF YOUR DOCTOR.THE OTHER SYMPTOMS CAN BE REVERSIBLE WITH TIME.YOU NEED NOT WORRY ABOUT THEM AS OF NOW.I SUGGEST,THAT YOU GET YOUR CHILD "SERUM DRUG LEVEL TESTING FOR VALPRIOC ACID" TO ASSESS ITS BLOOD LEVELS ACCURATELY AND IF NEEDED GO FOR DAILY DOSE REDUCTION AFTER CONSULTING YOUR NEUROPHYSICIAN.THE THERAPY CAN BE STOPPING AFTER TAPERING THE DRUG AFTER 5 YEARS OF SEIZURE FREE PERIOD AT MAXIMUM. THANK YOU. TAKE CARE.

This may affect your ability to drive or operate machinary. This medicine can cause some people to put on weight. Talk to your doctor about this before you start treatment so that you can discuss strategies, such as diet and exercise, for minimising any weight gain Discuss this with your doctor and then decide Hope this helps Take Care.
