Hello,
Mosquito repellent consists of harmful chemicals, pesticides/insecticides and hence should not be ingested. It should be kept out of the reach of children. Ingestion causes adverse effects on health like nausea,
abdominal pain, vomiting, headache, fever,
dizziness,
hypotension, epileptic seizures, etc. The seriousness of the symptoms depends on the amount ingested. Yes, it does affect the vital organs and needs symptomatic treatment.
Do not stay at home. Visit ER and get clinically evaluated by a GP. There may be a small but significant risk of death. Never drink mosquito repellents. Get admitted in a hospital you need to stay under observation. If needed blood samples will be taken to test serum electrolytes, serum
creatine, blood urea, hemogram,
arterial blood gas analysis, etc. Pupil observation, chest X-ray, and required imaging tests will be done. If needed, you will be intubated and ventilated. You will be given symptomatic treatment to keep you stable.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
