What Are The Chances Of Brain Damage When Oxygen Deprived For 10 Min?
A friend was out dining and apparently choke on food. He was oxygen deprived for over 10 mins. In the hospital now kidneys and liver shut down and he has not regained consciousness since yesterday. He is regaining some kidney and liver function but still essentially in a coma. With the amount of time he was deprived of oxygen, over 10 minutes, are the chances high that he will have some degree of brain damage.
I read your question and I understand your concern.
While it's not possible to give exact percentages, the possibility of sustaining permanent brain damage after 10 mins without oxygen is pretty high. However every case is individual and conclusions shouldn't be drawn too early, only time will tell. Exams like MRI can help but there are cases when there is damage even without focal lesions on MRI due to necrosis of only some neuronal layers which is not visible on normal MRI. EEG also would give some data on electrical brain activity.
I hope things work out for the best.
