What Are The Chances Of The Reoccurrence Of Melanoma?

I have been diagnosed with 0 Stage Melanoma Insite 2 on my bottom lip. Four years I had an operation on my lip for the same problem. The Dr. removed the area of my lip that was a problem and took skin from the inside of my mouth to construct a new bottom lip. Now I have the same diagnoses as before. Is it possible for the skin on the inside of my mouth could have created the new problem?

Radiation Oncologist 's  Response
Hi,

Melanoma is the cancer of the skin that has been known for recurring, however, to comment on your doubt, I would like to know the details of previous surgery, sometimes if some cells are left behind then they may give rise to recurrence in future.

However, since its been 4 years from your last surgery, I am assuming it was a good surgery and this is just an unfortunate recurrence that may be seen in 10-15% of individuals.
This recurrence is usually not related to new skin that has been placed.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Jatin Bhatia, Radiation Oncologist
