Hello and I hope I can help you today.
Many women with ireregular periods do ovulate sometimes, so it is possible that you and your wife conceived just recently before the test. The fact that the line is faint means that either you just very recently conceived, and the pregnancy hormones are low, or that the pregnancy may not be developing properly or be in a location outside the uterus, like the
Fallopian tube.
In this case the best course of action is to see your doctor again and she can perform a
blood test of the level of the pregnancy hormone to confirm it, and also an
ultrasound to make sure the pregnancy is in the uterus and developing normally.
If your wife develops any vaginal bleeding or severe
abdominal pain you should take your wife to an emergency room to rule out a tubal pregnancy or
early miscarriage.
I hope I was able to adequately answer your question and that my advice was helpful.
Best of luck to you and your wife in having a successful pregnancy, Dr. Brown
