Hallow Dear,
I can see from your history how deeply disturbed you are by the news of
HIV positive.
Sexual promiscuity is not the only way to get HIV infection. It can be achieved by receiving some infected one's blood or through intravenous injection also. Please remember whether you were exposed to any of these things.
Even if you are HIV positive as proved by DNA test, there is no need to abort the child. With proper care, you can prevent the HIV transmission to your foetus. From 14 weeks onwards, if you take triple antiretroviral treatment (ART), more than 95% HIV transmission to the foetus is prevented. With proper care in labour or delivery by
caesarean section can prevent the transmission during labour.
For prevention of HIV transmission in the new born, you have two options:
1. Continue ART, which even otherwise you will have to through out your life. Get the first dose of advised antiretroviral medicine to the baby within first 24 hours and continue further till the baby is being breast-fed. After six months, intermittently as advised and after 18 months get the baby tested for HIV. Immediate testing after birth may misguide you since your
antibodies present in the baby's blood will give false positive test.
2. Do not breast feed the child at all. Still the repeated testing of the baby from 6 months up to 18 months is mandatory.
I hope this explanation will get rid of the apprehension of baby's HIV infection from your mind and you will take proper care of your child - during
pregnancy, labour and after birth also.
Be positive. Be a good caring mother.
