Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I am 55 and have been taking 150 mg. Of Lamicatal for 11 years. I was diagnosed with BP-2 disorder at that time. I have been experiencing difficulties with confusion and cognitive abilities over the past 1-2 years. I will be talking with my doctor about reducing my dosage and I also wonder what your opinion is about long term effects of using lamictal. I am considering tapering off completely at some point but am also fearful that it may cause my deep depressive episodes to return. Also, do you know of any studies of long term use of lamictal? Thank you .
Long-term use of this drug may cause memory impairment, suicidal tendency, muscle weakness and cramps, cardiac arrhythmias, swollen or painful glands etc.
Don't withdraw the drug abruptly it may cause side effects.
Please consult your treating doctor, he will examine and treat you accordingly.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
