What Are The Long Term Side Effects Of Utovlan?

I am 46 and was prescribed Utovlan 10mg 3 x day to stop bleed 1 year ago as had thickened uterine lining. I had to take 3 x day for 10 days, then 2 day for 10 days then have a bleed. But every time I bled it was unbearable so I took them continuously for the last 6 months. I went off as felt hair thinning. Took Yasmin 3 days and bled badly. Back on Utovlan now. V happy, but worried if ok for longterm, ie one x 10mg pill 2 x day throughout cyle. Prob is if I stop for 3days I immediately bleed.

Hi,

Utovlan tablet contains norethisterone is used to treat the absence or irregularity of menstrual cycles. It is also used to treat abnormal growth of tissue in the uterus caused by endometriosis. It is used to treat abnormal uterine bleeding which is caused by hormonal imbalance. It is also used to prevent pregnancy. This medication works by preventing the release of eggs from the ovaries. The long term side effects of this medication are irregular uterine cycles, hair loss, acnes, breast tenderness and enlargement, mood swings, sweating, depression, facial hair growth, vaginal discharge, vaginal bleeding, delayed wound healing, high blood sugar, fluid retention, glaucoma etc.

Once you stop taking Utovlan, your period should occur within 2-3 days that may be heavy or lighter, and prolonged or short. Your cycle will be regular after 3-4 cycles. You should consult your doctor and he or she may advise you to undergo ultrasound to exclude the causes. Before start or stop taking this medication, you should inform your doctor.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
