What Are The Odds Of A Polyp Or Ulcer Turning Into Cancer?
Recently had colonoscopy and endoscopy during which big polyp removed and it was located in an ulcer of the colon and a smaller polyp elsewhere. Big polyp was located on the left. I am being treated for gastritis and hiatal hernia with Nexium and sucralfate. My questions are which came first, polyp or ulcer and what are the odds that the area is cancer?
Hi. Thanks for your query. Noted your history of colonoscopy showing a big polyp in an ulcer in the left colon, a smaller polyp elsewhere in the colon; upper GI Endoscopy showing gastritis and are under treatment for the same with hiatal hernia. Taking Nexium and Sucralfate for the same. Your question related to which came first - the polyp or ulcer and what are the odds to have the area to be cancerous... The bid polyps of more than 5 mm are suspicious and the larger one are feared to be due to cancer particularly if present with an ulcer. No one can know whether the ulcer came first or the polyp. I am sure the biopsy report is ready or will come soon as you have not mentioned the findings as this biopsy report alone can tell us whether there is cancer or not. Once the report is cancer you will required to consult an Onco-surgeon for further investigations and surgical treatment as per the reports and of the CT scan and post-operative histology findings. Follow the advise strictly. If the report is not a cancer, you will have to go for the regular follow up colonoscopy.
