What Are The Possible Causes For My Small Bone Size And Low Weight?

Dear Doctor, I am 22 years old, and I weigh 38 kg with a height of 153 cm. I ve noticed that my wrist bone, hand size, and feet size resemble that of a much younger person, around 10 years old. I would like to discuss ways to potentially increase my bone size and gain weight. Could you please evaluate my situation and provide guidance on possible causes, treatments, or lifestyle changes that could help? Thank you for your assistance. Sincerely

Hi,

You may want to consider having X-rays of your bone plates to see if they are fused. If they are fused then unfortunately further growth would not be possible. Your GP can ask for these for you. Additionally, you can consider having bloods for full blood count, growth hormone, cortisol and thyroid function test to see if any of these are abnormal and may have impacted on growth.

In terms of the weight, this can be gained at any age, you would need to put in more calories than you put out meaning the calorie value of the food or drink should be more than your output (activity level). This may mean using energy dense foods and drink. Our genetics (family history), food and drink intake, history of chronic illnesses and their treatments- can impact on final height and weight.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Michelle Gibson, General & Family Physician
