What Are The Possible Treatment For Pain In The Index Finger And Pip Joint ?

I jammed my index finger in March 2012. I have had severe pain almost daily. The pain is now going from my index finger all the way to my elbow. X-rays show no broken bones and MRI shows nothing unusual. My index finger had sensation of burning around the PIP joint at time of injury, and for some time afterward. I have also had physical therapy with heat (which felt wonderful) and 2 cortisone shots in elbow to relieve the pain. I experience pain with everything from brushing my teeth to opening jars, working or playing on computer, and usual household chores of working in the kitchen and sweeping, mopping, or dusting. The last bad episode came about when I tried to knit. Pain from the finger to elbow (to the point of tears). I am scheduled for a nerve test soon. Would nerve pain explain all my symptoms. Thanks!

Hi,

Welcome to HCM.

There is a possibility of nerve damage most probably median nerve during the injury you had last year. Neuralgias usually present with radiating pain along the nerve supply of the nerve being injured or inflamed. I suggest you get the nerve test done as soon as possible so that you can get appropriate therapy for nerve pain. I would also suggest you take over the painkillers for the nerve pain for now till the neurology consult.
Thanks.
