Hi,I am Dr. Subhankar Chakraborty (Gastroenterologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I m 76, never had a colonoscopy & my PCP wants me to have one. I m afraid the risks outweigh the benefits. I had a lumpectomy 1 year ago. Have had 2 digital ma,organs & both showed no signs of cancer. When I had my surgery, I was asleep for a little over 4 hours. That s another concern I have. I had another surgery @ age 36 & was asleep for 3 hours. I know there are serious risks& I have no symptoms. At my age, I d rather not put myself through this & risk causing problems this late in life. Does anyone Have an opinion?
Hello Sir, I can understand your concern. As it is an invasive procedure. But if your physician has advised you for same then sure it's important. It's risks can be 1 You may feel pain and bloated abdomen after the procedure done. 2 If they are planning to take a sample or biopsy then may be minor bleeding 3 And in very rarest cases it can cause tear in colon and rectal wall.
I will advise to take decision on your own as if you want to know your diagnosis or you do not want it.
And there is another option to you discuss with your physician about Virtual colonoscopy or CT colonography as it is non invasive.
