What Are The Risks In Getting Married To Same Blood Genotype?
Hi, may I answer your health queries right now ? Please type your query here...
Hello Doctor,
I want seek your professional advise with reagrds to my blood Genotype.
My name is Kayode am from Nigeria, the issue is that My wife to be and i share the same blood genotype- 'AS' this as been raising a lot of concerns from both family that we cannot marry cos there is chance of we giving birth to an ""SS"
If both you and your partner have an AS genotype then it comes down to probabilities. you have a 25% chance of having a child with a sickle cell anaemia. a 25% chance of a normal child and 50% chance of having AS children also called as a carrier state. Now there are ways that you can determine the genotype of a child while he/she are in utero but then religious / health restrictions may prevent you from carrying out an abortion if the child has a sickling trait. And probabilities are not cumulative I.e if say your first child has a sickling trait it does not mean the second will be normal. The second child again has 25% chance of having sickle cell anaemia. If you are in love I would urge you to consider adoption. thank you for your query.
