What Are The Risks Involved In Biopsy For Facial Paralysis ?
A 67 Female presents with a palpable nodule, left cheek 2months. A sonogram shows a serpentine cystic structure atleast 4 cm in length extending from the area of concern proximally towards the ear . There is no flow on color interrogation. Two ENT specialists will not do a frozen section due to risk for facial paralysis . Please provide any knowledge regarding the risks involved in removal or biopsy. Thank you. K. Bruno.

HI! SURGICAL REMOVAL OF THE CYST OR PART OF CYST CAN DAMAGE THE FACIAL NERVE TERMINAL BRANCHES WHICH USUALLY PASS THROUGH THE INVOLVED AREA & CAN RESULT IN FACIAL PARALYSIS OF THAT SIDE -- THIS AT TIMES BECOMES A TOUGH DECISION FOR DRS AS THEY NEED A TISSUE OF INVOLVED SIDE FOR PROPER DIAGNOSIS
