What Are The Risks Of Blowing Air Into Vagina During Pregnancy?
I am 33 weeks pregnant. I ve read that pregnant women should avoid air blown into their vagina because of a risk of air embolism. I am concerned because I spent a lot of time in a jetted tub and the air stream entered my vagina. I also had intercourse with my husband in the tub. What are the risks from this activity, and how long before I would see symptoms?
The risk of air embolism during pregnancy from forcibly blowing air into the vagina cannot be quantified- it has been described in a few case reports. However, air embolism causes cardiac arrest and sudden death! So if you are alive, this did not happen to you- obviously. Sex during pregnancy is healthy and normal- so do not be discouraged, and getting air in your vagina during sex is normal too- but it needs to be air under pressure to cause any risk of complications.
I hope I adequately answered your question today and that my advice was helpful.
Best wishes, Dr. Brown
