What Are The Risks Related With Gall Bladder Removal Surgery?
My Mom is 83 years old with moderate/severe AD. She has been diagnosed with her gall bladder walls thickening, and surgery to remove, has been recommended. My question relates to the risks involved with a surgery at this stage in her life.
HI, How are you? My name is Dr Suresh Raghavaiah. I am a liver and pancreas specialist and I hope to answer your question today. I am sorry to hear about your mother's diagnosis. Removal of the gall bladder now a days is very safe and a very straight forward surgery. It is usually done by laparoscopic technique and involves one day stay in the hospital. But given the age of your mother, the issue will be anaesthesia. Laparoscopy requires general anaesthesia which needs the patient to be in reasonable physical fitness level. I am sure the anaesthetist will examine your mother and will provide you with the respective risk assesment. But I have operated on patients as old as 90 yrs without any issues.
Hope this helps and hope your mother starts to feel better. Please do not hesitate to contact me for further details
Have a great day. Dr Suresh Raghavaiah
