Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I had dental surgery on Monday and I was prescribed Clindamycin. Yesterday the palms of my hands became very sensitive and sore to the touch. They were tingly. The doctor told me to stop taking the clindamycin. This morning I noticed along with my hand pain that both my legs were reddened and painful to the touch . They are swollen and more tingly when I stand up
Hi I can understand your concern regarding the safety of Clindamycin. It is an antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections most commonly caused by staphylococcus.
Common side effects of Clindamycin include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain, joint pain, skin rash or itching, heartburn, or sore throat.
Although less common however it can also cause a severe type of bloody diarrhea with abdominal cramps and shock and referred to as pseudomembranous enterocolitis (inflammation of the lining of intestines with false membrane formation) due to overgrowth of toxin producing clostridium difficile bacteria.
Consult your treating dentist to prescribed an alternate but a safer antibiotic for the dental infection. Hope this answers your treatment.
