Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I am taking Dillauid and Ambient to try and get to sleep after my recent heart surgery. I was in the hospital almost 2 wks... there were complications and one more small surgery happened. I will have to have that happen again in a couple weeks but should be fine. I has heart surgery, where I was one of the first patients in NA to get a new type if ICD called a Subcutaneous - ICD ( S-ICD ) which is less invasive to the body. My body rejected the other devices placed inside. The problem is Dilaulid works great but the dose is the lowest amount and we didn t know where to start, at 2 mg per pill. I m taking 2 now a day night / morning 12 hr apart but at night the pain is still there pretty bad... I like the Dilaulid because the site effects don t reck me... I honestly want to take it with my sleep aid and that would be it? I m 212 lb, do have a high tolerance to the pain meds since I ve had 6 heart surgeries since 12/30/13. Is it alright to take 6mg of Dilauid and 1 Ambient spaced apart at night so I can try to rest?

General & Family Physician, Dr. Katie Lee's Response
Hello,
First of all, you may take a higher dose of Dilaudid for your uncontrolled pain. The recommended oral tablet dose is 2-4 mg q4-6hr as needed.
However, do not increase the dose on your own until you talk to your doctor who is prescribing and managing the pain medications so he or she is aware of the change in your dose.
For your question regarding the concurrent intake of two different medications with Dilaudid and ambien, it is highly NOT recommended to take these together due to dangerous effects on CNS function causing extreme sedation as well as a cardiorespiratory function such as respiratory depression and low heart rate.
If you have to take two medications on daily basis, you may want to wait at least 4-6 hours until the dose of Dilaudid wears out before taking Ambien to minimize any serious adverse effects from taking two together.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care
Regards,
Dr Katie Lee, General & Family Physician
