Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
In March I was taking Glyburide along with my Metformin and I had a blood test done in May and my blood count was down, my A1C was down and I felt great now my Dr says I do not need Glyburide. I did not have any side efftects, now I do not feel any different , now I still feel great, just wonder what it is about Glyburide that most Drs do not want to put me on it.
Hi & Welcome to HCM. I appreciate your concern for the safety of Glyburide.
The most common side effects of Glyburide include:
1. Hypoglycemia (Low blood sugar) which results in sweating, shaking, fast heartbeat, hunger, blurred vision, dizziness, impaired concentration or tingling hands/feet. 2. Allergic reaction ( rash, itching, etc) 3. Abdominal upset, etc.
If the dose of Glyburide is not adjusted or if the patient forgets to take the food after taking it the risk of getting low blood sugar remains to be very high and hence the patients are required to undergo periodic estimation of the blood sugar to check its efficacy.
Since your HbA1c appears to be within normal range with Metformin alone hence your treating doctor has asked to discontinue Glyburide.
Hope to have answered your query.
