Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have taken Lamotrigine for about 6 years. For the last 3 years I developed a cough and for the last year it has become very annoying. I call it a "hacking" cough and I am always clearing my throat. It takes quite a while before I can stop it. I went to an Ear, Nose and Throat specialist and he looked up Lamotrigine and it has a cough as a side effect. I haven't called my neurologist yet because I wanted to research it more to make sure. I came upon this site in my research. I hope you have some insight for me. Thank you, Carol Livingston
Hello thanks for asking from HCM for your health related queries
Lamotrigine is an anti-convulscent drug used in seizures, bipolar disorder, mania, resistant depression etc. The drug is a safe drug but it has potential to cause rashes as side effects. In some individuals these rashes progress to serious Stevan's Johnsons syndrome which is a emergency. It can cause double vision, dry mouth, insomnia, drowsiness, cough, nightmares etc as side effects.
Cough is seen in some patients as side effects but you are taking the drug since last 6 years and as per my opinion other causes of cough should be ruled out before labelling Lamotrigine as cause of your cough. If other causes are ruled out then you can consult your neurologist for the side effects of drug.
Thanks, hope this helps you. Take care
