I thought I was going to start my menstrual cycle past week. I seen a pinkish swirl on my sanitary napkin. It lasted a day. This past Saturday I used the restroom and there was blood in my stool and its been there for the past three days in my stool. The blood is not a lot but enough to notice about one to two tablespoons. I feel a bit sluggish and have had a headache for about 2 days now. Could this be because I have the Mirena? I have had the Mirena for about a year in half and has never happened before. Should I hurry and make a doctors appointment?

General & Family Physician, Dr. Nishad BN's Response
Hi Thank you for asking HCM I have gone through your query. Mirena is a progesterone releasing IUD. Progesterone can cause constipation. So if you had constipation the blood in stool can be due to hemorrhoid. Take more fibre in diet to avoid this. Another side effect of hormone IUD is changes in menstrual cycle and irregular discharge. Prone to Pelvic inflammatory disease is also a possible adverse effect. Hope this may help you. Let me know if anything not clear. Thanks.
