Have made trips to India in the past. On each occasion, caught giardia, developed an allergy to metronidazole treatment. Friend suggested taking norflox tz , 1 daily, to prevent catching the bug. Any side effects? how effective for prophylaxis? best place to buy? generic available and efficacious?

General & Family Physician, Dr. Vasudha's Response
Hi, I understand your query. Giardiasis can not be prevented by any drug. Norflox TZ , your friend has suggested, has Norfloxacin ( used for bacterial infection) & Tinidazole- which is effective to control giardiasis in full prescribed dose. It has lesser side effects than metranidazole , & used when metranidazole is not tolerated/ giardia are resistant to it. If used in low dose, infection may get resistant & not effective when needed. Prevention of giardiasis can be by- -washing hands after visiting toilets/using tissue paper, before eating.Alcohol based hand sanitizers are good. -Use boiled water to drink/ use bottled water in tarvel. - avoid swallowing water while swimming. - Use of condom in anal sex. Thanks.
