Hi & Welcome.
I can understand your concern for the safety of Omeprazole.
Proton pump inhibitors like Omeprazole are found to be very effective in the treatment of acidity related stomach problems such as reflux disease, gastritis or
peptic ulcer. However, in the long run Omeprazole can cause
osteoporosis (thinning of the bones), recurrent infections (like lung infections), deficiency of
vitamin B12, etc.
You need to take Vitamin D with
Calcium supplements to prevent osteoporosis as long as you wish to continue taking Omeprazole.
Besides, depending upon the culture and sensitivity report a course of most appropriate antibiotics should also be prescribed by your treating doctor.
Besides medications you are advised to have certain life style modifications such as:
1. Avoid eating hot and spicy foods, caffeine, carbonated soft drinks and alcohol, smoking, etc.
2. Eat home cooked foods, take yoghurt at dinner along with fruits.
Drink plenty of water, do regular exercise, reduce your body weight if you are obese.
3. Do not sleep immediately after having meals. Sleep 2-3 hours after having meals. Raise the head end of your bed during sleep.
Hope the suggestions given above could be of great help in reducing the acid reflux during your sleep.
A feed back is appreciated.
