What Are The Side Effects Of TBSP Epsom Salt?

I am concerned that my sister was given a dosage of 6 TBS Espsom salts for constipation by a relative. She has had continuous diarehea since the dose and is having to wear incontinent diapers. Is this reason for concern and are there other concerns as well?

Hi,
Thanks for writing to HCM.
Epsom salt is magnesium sulphate. Magnesium is relatively safe for most people when taken by mouth appropriately.

It works by replacing magnesium in the body and increasing water in the intestines.

In some people, magnesium might cause stomach upset, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and other side effects. Probably in your sister case, it would have caused diarrhea as side effect. It might have caused due to drug overdose.

She can take intestinal motility stabilizing drugs and drink plenty of water and oral fluids.

Wishing her speedy recovery.
