My child has been priscribed valparin 200 , dosage 5ml every eight hours a day . He is 6 years old. According to EGG reports doctor said it s a seizure disorder .Other reports were normal. The treatment will continue for3years but inspite of the treatment he had fits for 2 times than the doctor adjusted the dosages of valparin . Plz inform me whether the treatment given is correct and if yes does it have any side effect
Thank you for your query. I can understand your concerns.
Valparin (Sodium Valproate) is prescribed to treat patients suffering from seizure disorder (Tonic-clonic,Absence,Atypical absence,Myoclonic,Focal-onset, Atonic seizures) Side effects: Neurologic:Ataxia,Sedation,Tremor Systemic:Hepatotoxicity,Thrombocytopenia,Gastrointestinal irritation Weight gain,Transient alopecia,Hyperammonemia
About 70% of children who have their seizures completely controlled with anti-epileptic drugs for 03 years can eventually discontinue the drugs. In most cases it is preferable to reduce the dose of the drug gradually over 2–3 months to remain seizure free after drug withdrawal.
