Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have been using vivelle dot patches for 14 years. started with 1.0 then down slowly to .025. i stopped using then and became very ill. violent headache and vomiting. Im now using .0185 and i have been moody and unable to sleep. My dr said i would have symptoms with every decrease. How long will it take my body to adjust?
I got nothing to add. The standard weaning practice (which is as described; dr. doing the textbook correct and usual way of weaning) is to make a change about once a week and see what occurs. If it is mostly tolerable, stay on the decrease. After it is adjusted to zero, there will be a series of withdrawal effects with different timings. The really bad symptoms might not even occur with the tapering you are on now, but if they did, they would gradually decline over several days (up to 1-2 weeks), and other medicines can be used to lower them. Can try alternate day weaning: one day usual dose, next day the lower dose, third day the usual dose, fourth day the lower dose, etc. THen, when off the medicine there is likely to be thoughts about missing the previous medication. This psychological effect lasts weeks to months. Finally, assuming there was a very good reason to be on the vivelle: like irregular periods, or painful ones, these are likely to come back when not on the vivelle and stay until something else is done.
