Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My son is 5 year old and we used to give him Zentel 10 ml suspension every 6 months. The last dose was given around December 2014. But he is complaining of itching around the anal area now. Can we give the Zentel syrup now? I recently moved into the US. Can we get the Zentel syrup from the pharmacy without a prescription?
Hello dear user of HCM! Thank you for your question!
I understand very well the concerns you have about your son. Zentel (albendazole) is a medication used to treat worms.
Since your son has anal area itching there is a possibility for having worms but you have to confirm that by a stool test for parasites. If the test is positive you have to give him Zentel according to the results and instructions one day only, and you can repeat the same dose after 2-3 weeks to complete the proper cure.
There is no need for other doses. After the second dose you may repeat the stool test again to see if all the parasites are killed.
Parasitic infections are common in children and can be repeated several times. You have to keep a good hygiene, wash his hands often and the fruits and vegetables too.
I wish you and your son all the best! DR ERIOL.
