What Are The Side Effects Of Extra Dosage Of Calpol In A Kid?

i think i may have given my son a double dose(a spoon and a half, 7.5ml each time) of 6+ calpol by accident, which means he may have had 3x5ml spoons in under 4 hours. I cannot remember when he had the first lot and now i am worried. Should i take him to hospital?

Hi,

Calpol 6+ has 250 mg per 5 ml so you have given 375 mg. The dose of paracetamol is 15 mg per kg of weight regardless of age. The dose you have given would be suitable for a child who weighed about 25 kg, so possibly one and half the dose he have gotten. Paracetamol is a relatively safe drug. He have taken only extra half doses twice than his expected dose. So, don't be worried at all. He would be fine. But the next time don't do repeat such type of mistakes again. If any complications occur, then consult with a physician immediately and do as needful accordingly.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Zubayer Alam, General And Family Physician,
