Hi,

These medicines are commonly prescribed to reduce the high blood cholesterol and triglycerides to prevent heart attack or stroke. Their long term use may cause myopathy (muscle weakness, muscle pain or tenderness), gall stones, increased blood sugar, memory impairment, liver dysfunction and stomach upset. Although very rare however these medications can also cause life-threatening muscle damage called 'rhabdomyolysis' resulting in severe muscle pain, liver damage, kidney failure and death.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali, General & Family Physician
