Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have completed 44 Proton Therapy sessions at the University of Pennsylvania Hospital and have been given a total of 3 Lupron injections of 7mg, 22mg, and 22mg. The last one was given on July 7th and is causing me a lot of discomfort. Is this going to last a long time or will these miserable side effects diminish with time? What are my chances for being impotent?
Thank you for your query. I can understand your concerns.
Lupron (leuprolide) is synthetic luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone (LHRH) agonist of greater potency than naturally occurring gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH). The following are the side effects in brief: CARDIOVASCULAR: Arrhythmias; edema; angina or hypertension rarely. CNS: Mental depression; headache; decreased libido. DERMATOLOGIC: Erythema; ecchymosis; irritation at injection site; acne. ENDOCRINE: Hot flashes; gynecomastia. GU: impotence; testicular atrophy; MUSCULOSKELETAL: Decreased bone density; symptom flare, manifested by increased bone pain during first 1 to 2 wk of therapy in patients with bone metastases. The side effects will wear off over time.In case of depot preparation ,the effects remain longer. One has to balance between benefit and side effects.
