Doctor, I am a diabetic patient for the last more than 10 years. I was taking BASALOG insulin 10 units in the morning along with one each tablet of Tripride 2mg and mignar 25mg. and night half a tablet of Tripride. Recently i had hypoglycemic condition in the morning and my sugar levels immediately after that used to be fasting 70 to 110 and PP 140 to 170. The doctor has advised me to stop the insulin and continue with only the tablets. My question is ,after taking insulin for such a long period, can it be stopped? andcan a such a situation be realistic?. My present sugar levels are 95 to 110 fasting and 155 to 180 post prandial. Thank u doctor
Dear sir i can understand your concern. in my opinion stopping insulin is not a great idea as the medictaion used by you tripride contains a drug called glimipride which will squeeze pancreas and extract insulin from it.By long term use of this medication glimepiride the pancreas will exhaust soon. Its always suggestable to use this medication in a lower quantity and start insulin as early as possible to reduce burden on pancreas and to keep natural insulin secretion for a longer time. kindly speak with your doctor for readjusting of dosage regards Dr vamsi Diabetologist
