What Are The Symptoms Of G6PD?

One of our twin boys who have G6pd has been complaining of a stomach ache for a few days now. He has has a high temperature and now has red eyes and what looks like some conjunctivitis. Could all this be rlated to G6PD? We have not had anyissues with G6PD yet so am unsure about it.

Hi,
Thanks for writing in.

Too little G6PD leads to the destruction of red blood cells or hemolysis. There are acute phases of hemolysis bu the episodes are usually brief, because the body continues to produce new red blood cells, which have normal activity.

Persons with this condition do not display any signs of the disease until their red blood cells are exposed to certain chemicals in food or medicine, or to stress.

Dark urine
Enlarged spleen
Fatigue
Pallor
Rapid heart rate
Shortness of breath
Yellow skin color (jaundice)

Please consult pediatrician and get further testing done.
