What Are The Symptoms Of HIV?

Dear Doctor,

4 months ago I had an intercourse with a woman. Unfourtunately the condom ripped during the intercourse. My glans has therefore been exposed for about 1-2 minutes. I have recently tried the Icare rapid Hiv test. The test results were negative. However, I could not get much blood out of my finger tip, probably even less than a single drop. Nevertheless, the test panel showed a single red line, where the letter "c" is marked, which means that one is negative. Could it be that this result is just due to an insufficient amount of blood?
Thanks for your help

Hi,
Welcome to HCM.
Nothing to worry. You are free from both HIV 1 and 2.
This test is detecting the antibodies present in the blood. Quantity of blood bled, is not important for the test.
'C' line would always be shown reddish with all who were get examined . C means Control. It is given to compare the appearance of lines over HIV 1 OR 2. Only if a line or dot (in some test) is present either with HIV 1 or 2, then only it indicates that the individual has HIV infection. Line only on 'C' (Control) indicates that you are non reactive for HIV. The test done after 4 months is conclusive.

The rapid hiv test needs only a drop of blood...this is sufficient..if it wont then even control line would not appear. If there is proper control that means test line should appear if result id positive and it doesn't appear if test is negative as in your case. In case if you have symptoms of HIV like fever, lymphadenopathy, weight loss, weakness, recurrent respiratory infection, chronic diarrhoea, fungal infection, herpese zoster or candidiasis etc then you can go for repeat test with more accuracy. But as per you description of test it id properly done. so dont worry.

I think it will help.

Thank you for your contact to health care magic.
I read and understand your concern.
I am Dr J.D Mangukiya answering your concern.
from your history it is clear that u have an exposure so it is wise to have an HIV testing
As u have tried rapid testing so rapid test detects antibody to hiv virus and it is only become positive only after 3-6 months ..your test is negative this stage so u should repeat the test again after another 3 months to confirm as there is a window period of HIV virus during that period antibody test may come negative even though virus antigens are circulating in your body.
another option to confirm the virus infection is do fourth generation ELISA testing that may detect P24 antigen in your blood.
other P24 antigen assay are also available in laboratories so u should confirm the infection either of above test
symptoms of HIV infection is vary according to your immune status ..initially there is no any symptoms but gradually CD4 counts become lesser and u may have symptoms like fever, diarrhea for 1 month and weight loss upto 10% of the body weight.
but at this stage u should not much worry test is negative after 4 moths so there are less chances of become HIV positive

I will be happy to answer your further concern.
Thank you,
Dr J.D. Mangukiya
