Hello Katherine! I am assuming you are referring to genital
warts (there are many types of
HPV). Unfortunately, there is no cure for HPV once you have contracted it. The virus stays with you forever. However, with certain medications, lifestyle changes, and a dose of luck, you can suppress the virus from 'resurfacing'. Things that can cause the virus to come back include a weakened immune system (such as from certain diseases, excessive alcohol use,
smoking, or
stress). The first thing you may experience is a
tingling sensation or an itchy feeling for 2-3 days before the wart appears, but more frequently people dont feel anything until they notice small bumps, which will later grow in size and shape to a 'cauliflower' appearance. If you start to notice bumps early, see your doctor! The earlier you can get it treated with prescription anti-viral medications, the faster your infection will heal, and it won't be as severe.
The response written above is a
medical opinion, and does not substitute an evaluation by a medical professional. I cannot guarantee accuracy in my answer when I cannot physically evaluate you, and do not know your past medical history, the medications you are on, your lifestyle habits, etc; therefore I cannot be held liable for any consequences that occur as a result of my opinion.
