hi, my 15 year old daughter has some pain in her ankle with walking. she doesn t recall hurting it, but plays basketball & other sports like running. how do i know if she needs to be see by a doctor with a possible sprained ankle, & how do i know if she has torn a ligament?
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Most probably it is a minor contusion or sprain. Ligament injury is very unlikely. As of now, she can take analgesics like Ibuprofen or Diclofenac for pain. Apply ice packs and take adequate rest and immobilize the affected foot. In most cases the symptoms will subside with this conservative measures. If symptoms persist better to consult an orthopedic and get an MRI scan done.
Wishing you good health.
Thanks.
