Hi,I am Dr. Prabhakar Koregol (Cardiologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Good Afternoon, One year ago I suffered an aortic dissection. I recovered miraculously! I was told by several of the medical staff I was a walking miracle. However, I have been told by other than my surgeon that my heart and artery walls have been weakened and I will always have to be on blood pressure medication although all my numbers have been continuously low for months. Is this the norm for this condition?
Hi welcome to HCM. Aortic dissection can arise from two major factors like uncontrolled blood pressure and intrinsic weakness of the wall of the aorta.Yes indeed a life long antihypertensive medication is needed to prevent the development of shear stress and propagation of dissection.Aortic dissection can present with chest pain ,shortness of breath and variability in the pulses between the arms.Avoid smoking and intense physical activity.Periodical monitoring of extent of dissection can be reviewed on semiannual MRI.Consult your cardiologist for further queries. Thank you.
