Hi I think I may be Bi Polar, and I was just curious as to if I could go to my primary care doctor and be diagnosed, or if I have to go somewhere else. I would like to be diagnosed as quickly as possible, for the sake of my sanity, and to be a better wife to my husand, and mother to my children
Thank you for posting on HCM Bipolar disorder - normally presents with lots of mood swings - the quick transition from being really happy to really sad is very sudden I suggest you do online self questionnaire on www.blackdoginstitute to get some idea & then with your personal score you can see primary care Dr who will arrange a referral to see specialist. Hope this helps
Hello and welcome to Healthcare Magic. Thanks for your query.
I understand that you are wondering whether you have Bipolar disorder or not. Bipolar disorder is a mental illness where the person has episode of both depression and mania. It is important to realize that simply having mood swings alone doesn't mean that a person has Bipolar. The mood swings have to be in clear-cut episodes, each of which last for around few weeks.
The diagnosis of Bipolar disorder is a clinical diagnosis. So, a detailed history and psychological assessment is necessary to make the correct diagnosis. Online tools or self assessment questionnaires may not be reliable.
So, I would advise you consult a psychiatrist in your place for a proper evaluation. In case, you are diagnosed with Bipolar disorder, then treatment is essential. There are effective treatment options available - in the form of mood stabilizer medication as well as psychological therapies which can help control your mood fluctuations.
Wish you all the best.
Regards, Dr. Jonas Sundarakumar MBBS., DPM., MRCPsych.(U.K.) Consultant Psychiatrist
