What Are The Symptoms Of Depression?

The question is about my son's father who is unable to complete tasks or even make the easiest decisions. He started remodeling a house 40 years ago and gave up. Can't even purchase a new faucet for the kitchen sink. He is alcoholic and started drinking 6 years ago after 16 being dry.Nothing really changed for him during those 16 years. He has family money and does not work or socialize. We are friends but not together.Is he depressed?

I have gone through your question in detail and I can understand what he is going through.
His long standing intellectual disability could have many reasons the commonest cause being mental retardation. His IQ needs to be assessed to identify if he is having mental retardation. If so then there is no specific treatment for MR at this stage.
Depression cannot be this severe and still persist for this long continuously.
