Hi,I am Dr. Andrew Rynne (Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I am 89 years and have just been diagnosed wih oseoprosis. The warnings scare me. I have been taking 1200 units of calcium with Vitamin D. What are the risks - pro/con. I have hypothyroid, controlled high blood pressure, and urinary incontinence.
Hello and welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
There are not really any symptoms of osteoporosis unless there is a fracture. The most common fractures occur in the hip and in the vertebral column. You should continue with the calcium and vitamin D and be very careful not to fall. Improving balance with a class like Tai Chi can help to prevent falls.

Osteoporosis means a high risk for fractures. There are fractures that will only cause discomfort (like wrist fractures) and fractures that may even - ultimately - cause death (like fractures of the femur). If you do have osteoporosis then adequate daily intake of calcium and vitamin D is recommended. More than 1000mg of calcium are required for most individuals (at least two servings of dairy products). For osteoporosis of the femur treatment with drugs might be required as well. There are many drugs to choose from. The choice depends on your medical history, so this is better left for your doctor to do. Depending on the choice you may experience different side effects (or not, it's a matter of luck). For individuals with a high fracture risk the doctor rarely considers the potential side effects.
