Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Are The Uses And Side Effects Of Clonidine And Diltiazem?
my Cardiologist has me on Clonidine .1 mg twice a day and Diltiazem 240 mg once a day along with 20 mg Linsinopril. I have lost a lot of weight and my BP has been doing very well. I read that Clonidine and Diltiazem together can cause adverse reaction and can cause you to have a pacemaker put in. (Sinus bradycardia resulting in hospitalization and pacemaker insertion has been reported in association with the use of clonidine concurrently with diltiazem. Monitor heart rate in patients receiving concomitant diltiazem and clonidine.) For the past few weeks I ve had a couple of heart palpitations problems and I feel like I should be taken off something.
Hello, Thanks for posting your query on HCM I understand your concern. It is true that the combination of clonidine and diltiazem may produce a sinus bradycardia. You should check your pulse rate or heart rate. Most of the electronic BP apparatuses have the facility to check the heart rate. If the heart rate is above 60 per minute, you have nothing to worry. If it is below 50/minute, you should discuss your concern with your cardiologist. He would suggest a medicine which will not lower your heart rate. Wish you good health. Dr. Noble Zachariah
