What Are The Ways I Can Support My Visually Impaired Mother Dealing With Depression Due To Retinitis Pigmentosa?
Hello sir, my mother is 60 years old. She has been suffering from retinitis pigmentosa for last 30 years. She has been gradually loosing her vision and is eventually now almost blind. Because of this, my mother is going through depression. Please help us sir.
Since Retinitis Pigmentosa is a chronic progressive disease affecting the vision, it can eventually adversely affect the quality of life of the patient leading to psychological impacts like depression or anxiety. It is very important to detect these psychological concerns at an early stage and initiate specific treatment plans because these might be missed due to social stigma or ignorance.
Psychosocial support for the patient is very important to cope with the situation. Try to make her feel optimistic. I would recommend a Psychiatrist consultation at the earliest for further evaluation of your mothers psychological concerns, counselling and plan a definitive management which would be most effective with respect to her.
Hope I have answered your queries. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr Devi Venugopal Rita, MD General Medicine
