What Can I Do About A Sprain In The Ankle That Is Black And Blue Apart From Noticeable Divots?

Sprained an ankle, ankle is black and blue. Above my ankle on my lower legs are noticeable divots that you can see and psychically feel. Majority of the pain is quite dull and mostly in the lower leg ever since the ankle injury. Any ideas why there is divots?

Hello,

You had an ankle sprain, thereafter you have black and blue discoloration. You are advised to clean your feet and ankle gently with water and soap. Apply ointment Thrombophob on the affected area to disperse any blood clots on the inside of the skin. It should go away in 4-5 days when applied twice daily. Keep your ankle on a stool while sitting & o a pillow when you are on bed.

This will help to prevent swelling, discoloration of the skin and water retention. You can take NSAIDs, one stat after food to prevent pain and inflammation. Alternately doing cold and warm compress may give relief. DO not try to walk unnecessarily, do not give pressure on the affected foot. Stay at rest.

Get clinically examined by an orthopedics, get X-ray ankle done AP and Lat view. If needed CT or MRI can be done to detect any formation of ankle osteophytes. If needed you will be given a crepe bandage around the ankle, in case of any type of fracture you will be accordingly managed. Osteophytes or any other pathology will be given conservative treatment, treated by physical therapy. If needed surgery may be recommended.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
