Hi,
Myopia is very common condition in the children. About 5% of all pre-school children, about 10% of elementary school children and about 30% of adolescent have myopia. This figure is on the increase. Definitely, less of outdoor activities and more screen time is one of the reason. Exposure to sunlight stimulates the release of
dopamine by the body, it affects the health of
retina. It slows the process of lengthening of eyeball (Axial growth), which is a common finding in myopia.
Also, sunlight is a main source of vitamin D, which is necessary for the health of eyes. Also, outdoor activities always see the pictures of objects in a big size as compared on the screen and this process slows the progression of myopia. Though, the condition of myopia can not be reversed, but its progression can be stopped or slowed down. Therefore, outdoor activities of the kids should be increased and screen time should be limited.
Earlier diagnosis of myopia by complete examination of eyes and the correction of myopia, if present by glasses or contact lenses should be done at the earliest possible. This is necessary, as pre-school children and school going children learn the words by images. Therefore, a clear vision is necessary for a good vocabulary and meaningful grasping of the things.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
