What Can Be Done When A New Mother Has Become Paranoid About Dust, Insects And Disease Affecting The Child Leading To Repetitive Cleaning And Washing?

My daughter has delivered a baby. She is very over protective about her. Keeps washing her things again and again. She has always been paranoid about dust insects disease etc. Her fears are affecting her health and also the older childs. She doesn t let her go out much. She gets frantic when she sees her older child even slightly dirty. What should I do?

Psychiatrist 's  Response
Hi,

Rather than paranoia, it is obsession, the disorder is called OCD, obsessive compulsive disorder, which is due to altered serotonergic pathways in the mind (brain). A course of SSRIs and behavior modification techniques would lead to significant improvement in the majority. Consult a psychiatrist, at the earliest.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
